Erythema Nodosum Information

Erythema nodosum (EN) is an acute, nodular, erythematous eruption that usually is limited to the extensor aspects of the lower legs. EN is presumed to be a hypersensitivity reaction and may occur in association with several systemic diseases or drug therapies, or it may be idiopathic. The inflammatory reaction occurs in the panniculus. There are several scenarios for the outcome of erythema nodosum. Typically, these areas of nodular tenderness range in size from about a dime to a quarter and they may be tender and inflamed off and on for a period of weeks.

Erythema Nodosum is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Erythema Nodosum may occur to the people at any age.

Causes of Erythema Nodosum

The exact cause of the Erythema Nodosum is unknown.

Infections:

  • Streptococcus
  • Coccidioidomycosis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis
  • Cat scratch disease
  • Tularemia
  • Yersinia
  • Leptospirosis
  • Psittacosis
  • Histoplasmosis
  • Mononucleosis (EBV)

Treatment of Erythema Nodosum

Specific treatment for erythema nodosum will be determined by your physician based on the cause of the disorder and may include:

  • antibiotics
  • treatment of underlying cause
  • bed rest to relieve pain
  • aspirin
  • corticosteroids
  • antiinflammatory drugs, and cortisone by mouth or injection
