Lichen Sclerosus Information

Lichen Sclerosus is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Lichen Sclerosus may occur to the people at any age.

Causes of Lichen Sclerosus

The cause of the Lichen Sclerosus is unknown. Some may have a genetic tendency towards this disease. Hormone levels which are abnormally high may also cause this. Skins which have already been scarred or damaged are susceptible to this disease. Lichen sclerosus however, is not contagious.

Symptoms of Lichen Sclerosus

  • Ridges in the nails like onycholysis
  • Lichen planus can appear on any area of the skin. The most common areas are the inner wrists, the forearms and the ankles.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Itching in the location of a lesion, mild to severe.
  • On the scalp, lichen planus may cause hair loss.
  • In the mouth, it looks like lacy white patches on the inside of the cheeks or on the tongue.
  • Metallic taste in the mouth.

Treatment of Lichen Sclerosus

Methods For Treating Lichen Sclerosus are :

  • Ultra potent topical corticosteroid (strong cortisone cream or ointments)
  • cartico steroid cream
  • Do not use any douches, perfumes, feminine hygiene sprays, commercial lubricants, or other substances on the vulva other than those prescribed or suggested.
  • Use lubrication if needed with intercourse, most women with chronic vulvar symptoms do not find intercourse pleasurable and therefore do not lubricate naturally. Vegetable oil is a good lubricant to use because it has no alcohol or preservatives in it.
  • Xylocaine jelly will often help to numb the area before intercourse and make sexual activity more comfortable. This should be applied liberally 15-20 minutes before intercourse. This medication can also be used at other times when irritation or pain is at its worst.
  • Panty liners and pads irritate some people. Allergies to chemicals in the pads can occur and may not show up until several days after use.
