Miliaria Information

Miliaria is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Miliaria may occur to the people at any age. Miliaria is a very general type of skin disease in which small and itchy rashes appear on the skin. It is another name for sweat rash.Miliaria arises from obstruction of the sweat ducts. It is commonest in hot, humid conditions but may occur in desert regions. It affects up to 30% of people exposed to these climatic conditions. However, there is a striking variation in individual susceptibility. Very young infants are especially prone to it. Miliaria may begin within a few days of arrival in a tropical climate but is maximal after 2-5 months.

Causes of Miliaria

Cause of Miliaria are as follows:

1) Miliaria crystallina or sudamina is caused by obstruction of the sweat ducts close to the surface of the skin and appears as tiny superficial clear blisters that break easily.

2) Hot, humid conditions: Tropical climates, incubators in neonatal nurseries, and febrile illnesses may precipitate miliaria.

3) Drugs: Bethanechol, a drug that promotes sweating, and isotretinoin, a drug that affects follicular differentiation, are reported to cause miliaria.

4) Bacteria or ultra violet radiation may be possible causes of miliaria.

Treatment of Miliaria

Treatment of Miliaria inlcudes:

1) No compelling reason to treat miliaria crystallina exists because this condition is asymptomatic and self-limited

2) Anti-itch lotions, such as calamine and topical steroid creams can be used to sooth and control the itching Hydrocortisone cream (not ointment) can help in itching problem.

3) Antimicrobial agents are effective in suppressing experimentally induced miliaria.

4) Cool water compresses and good ventilation will soothe inflamed areas.

5) Antiseptics Antiseptics and antistaphylococcal antibiotics can combat bacterial overgrowth.

6) Ccool environment, lightweight clothing, and lukewarm baths can be effective in the treatment of miliaria
