Onychomycosis is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Onychomycosis may occur to the people at any age. Without treatment, however, the toenails can become so thick that they press against the inside of the shoes, causing pressure, irritation, and pain. Fingernail infection may cause psychological, social, or employment-related problems.

Onychomycosis is a skin infection which is realted to fungal infection. This disease effects finger or toe nails which is very difficult to cure.. Onychomycosis causes fingernails or toenails to thicken, discolor, disfigure, and split. At first, onychomycosis appears to be only a cosmetic concern.

Causes of Onychomycosis

Following are some of the causes of Onychomycosis

1) Onychomycosis is caused by a fungus namely trichophyton rubrum and trichophyton mentagrophytes.

2) Onychomycosis can be caused by yeast (candida albicans or candida parapsilosis)

3) Sometimes trauma or damage to a nail predisposes to the development of onychomycosis

4) Often a person has had athlete's foot for a long time prior to the development of onychomycosis

5) Candida albicans primarily causes chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis of the nail.

Treatment of Onychomycosis

Treatment of Onychomycosis includes:

  • Topical antifungals
  • One of the most effective new treatments is called Leucatin , an all-natural solution that can eliminate fungal infection and prevent recurrence.
  • Onychomycosis of the finger nails can be treated by taking pills called griseofulvin.
  • A new medication, terbinafine, is now available for the treatment of toe and finger nail fungal infections. Terbinafine is taken once a day for 6 to 12 weeks.
  • Surgical approaches to OM treatment include surgical nail avulsion and matrixectomy by chemical or mechanical means.
  • A combination of oral, topical, and surgical therapy can increase efficacy and reduce cost.
