Pfiesteria is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Pfiesteria may occur to the people at any age. Pfiesteria causes lesions in fish and has caused massive fish kills in rivers, including the Neuse River, where a 1995 outbreak killed 14 million fish and closed 364,000 acres of shellfish beds.

Pfiesteria piscicida is a microbe, a one-celled organism. Pfiesteria was first identified in 1991 by researchers at North Carolina State University. It exists in a non harm status but it can change into a form that may give off toxins that can kill fish and other aquatic life. Scientist have not yet determined what causes Pfiesteria to turn toxic.

Causes of Pfiesteria

The cause of the Pfiesteria is unknown. This disease is caused due to a micro organism named as dinoflagellate this organism is harmless ut it can change into a form that may give off toxins that can kill fish and other aquatic life

Treatment of Pfiesteria

Till now there has been no evidence of illness related to consumption of contaminated seafood or shellfish. However, one should avoid consuming or coming into contact with fish covered with lesions or those caught in areas contaminated with it.
