Tinea Capitis is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but it may occur to the people at any age. Tinea capitis may simulate dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, and scrapings should be taken for KOH examination and fungal culture, especially in children, if hair loss is present. This disease also has the potential to attack the shafts and follicles of the hair, and is a form or dermatophytosis. It is also called ringworm of the scalp and tinea tonsurans.

Causes of Tinea Capitis

The cause of the Tinea Capitis is unknown. The causes of the various tinea infections of the beard and scalp were first identified in the 1830's, and about fifty years later, it was shown that several types of fungi cause the tinea capitis infection.

Treatment of Tinea Capitis

Methods For Treating Tinea Capitis are :

  • Medicated shampoo, containing selenium sulfide, may reduce the spread of infection
  • Systemic administration of griseofulvin provided the first effective oral therapy for tinea capitis.
  • Newer antifungal medications, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, terbinafine, and fluconazole,
  • Keep away the infected members or pets used combs etc
  • Oral antifungal medications are required.
